ProProfs Knowledge Base
ProProfs Knowledge Base suits a one-person team that wants a free start and a public help centre, with 60+ languages and reader ratings available. Costs grow per author: Essentials is $49 for each. The catch: the pricing page lists approval workflow only on the top tier, and Free stops at 1 author and 25 pages.
GitBook
GitBook suits documentation teams that want a free start, Git sync, reviewer-gated change requests and a docs API. The catch is that Free is single-user and has no custom domain, and SAML SSO and visitor authentication sit on the upper plans. Its docs do not say whether the search report lists searches with no results.
Both products are scored by the same rules: how we score knowledge base tools.
