--- title: Opera GX canonical: https://saasranked.com/software/opera-gx/ category: Web Browsers points: 38 rank: 10 of 12 facts_checked: 2026-10-08 --- # Opera GX Free gaming browser with a built-in ad blocker, free VPN, sync and a sidebar of chat apps. 38 points out of 100. #10 of 12 web browsers. Vendor: Opera. Website: https://www.opera.com/gx - Opera GX is free and runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS [2][3]. - Its ad blocker is built in, needs no add-on and blocks YouTube and Twitch ads [5]. - A free VPN, Opera Sync, page translation and Tab Islands tab groups are listed as features [1][6][8]. - Opera runs a public bug bounty programme on Bugcrowd; its page does not name Opera GX in scope [7]. Verdict: Opera GX suits people who want a free browser with ad blocking, a VPN, sync and tab groups built in, plus gaming extras [1][5][6]. It costs nothing [3]. The catch: the GX pages say tracker blocking is a setting and do not describe fingerprinting protection or vertical tabs [4][6]. Best for: Gamers who want resource limits and chat apps in the browser. ## Points | Criterion | Line | Value | Points | Note | |---|---|---|---|---| | Systems | Other systems | macOS, Linux, iOS, Android | 8/8 | The download page lists Opera GX for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS [2]. | | Privacy and security | Blocks trackers by default | Not published | 0/8 | GX page shows a Block trackers toggle in Settings but does not say it is on by default [4]. | | Privacy and security | Built-in ad blocker | Yes | 5/5 | GX page: the ad blocker is part of GX, no extension needed, switched on with Block ads [5]. | | Privacy and security | Fingerprinting protection | Not published | 0/7 | Not published on the vendor's GX privacy page [4]. | | Privacy and security | Built-in VPN or proxy | Yes | 3/3 | GX lists a free VPN as a browser feature; Opera says its free VPN protects activity inside the browser [4][12]. | | Privacy and security | Open source | Not published | 0/5 | Not published on the vendor's GX pages [1][4]. | | Privacy and security | Public bug bounty | Not published | 0/4 | Opera's bug bounty page says it runs a public programme on Bugcrowd, but neither that page nor the GX security page names Opera GX in scope [4][7]. | | Privacy and security | Phishing and malware warnings | Not published | 0/5 | Opera's default fraud and malware warnings are described for Opera, not GX [10]. | | Sync and sign-in | Free sync across devices | Yes | 6/6 | GX lists Opera Sync ("Synchronize the Opera GX browsers on any of your devices"); Opera's help page says sync covers bookmarks, history, passwords, settings and open tabs [1][13]. | | Sync and sign-in | End-to-end encrypted sync | Not published | 0/8 | Not published on the GX pages: the passphrase option is in Opera's general FAQ, which does not mention GX [9]. | | Sync and sign-in | Built-in password manager | Yes | 3/3 | GX security page: you can save, edit or remove stored credentials, all encrypted [4]. | | Sync and sign-in | Saves passkeys | Not published | 0/5 | Not published on the vendor's GX pages [4][6]. | | Extensions | Chrome Web Store extensions | Not published | 0/6 | Opera's FAQ describes Chrome Web Store installs for Opera; no GX page says so [9]. | | Extensions | Manifest V2 extensions still work | Not published | 0/6 | Not published on the vendor's extensions help page [11]. | | Tabs and tools | Vertical tabs | Not published | 0/4 | Not published on the vendor's GX features page [6]. | | Tabs and tools | Tab groups | Yes | 4/4 | GX features list Workspaces and Tab Islands; Tab Islands can be named and collapsed [6][8]. | | Tabs and tools | Built-in page translation | Yes | 4/4 | GX features page lists Opera Translate: read any site in your language [6]. | | Tabs and tools | Separate profiles | Not published | 0/4 | GX features page mentions profiles only as a tagline, without describing separate profiles [6]. | | Price | Cost to use | $0 | 5/5 | Opera's browsers page says to download free Opera browsers, including the gaming one [3]. | ## Plans | Plan | Price | Per month (USD) | |---|---|---| | Opera GX | Free [3][1] | $0 | ## Strengths - Free for desktop and mobile [3]. - Ad blocker is part of the browser, with no add-ons or extensions needed [5]. - Built-in free VPN, with no registration needed [4]. - Saved passwords are stored encrypted [4]. - Tabs can be grouped, named and collapsed as Tab Islands [8]. ## Limits - Tracker blocking is a toggle in Settings, and the GX page does not say it is on by default [4]. - No fingerprinting protection is described on the GX privacy page [4]. - Vertical tabs are not described on the GX features page [6]. - The bug bounty page does not name Opera GX in its scope [7]. ## Vendor claims (not scored) - Opera says every tab in GX runs in its own sandbox [4]. ## Sources 1.
